Retractable Rigid Catenary System
Overhead Catenary Systems

The Conductix‑Wampfler Retractable Catenary System is a removable overhead electrification solution purpose‑built for pantograph‑equipped rolling stock in rail maintenance depots. Designed to interlock with existing depot equipment—including disconnectors, walkways, bridge cranes, doors, signaling equipment, and lifting platforms, it enables safe roof access and unobstructed lifting of vehicles for bogie inspection and maintenance.
Engineered for safety and uptime, the system includes emergency stop, alarm, and maximum‑usage controls. Swiveling steel arms (up to 6 m long, spaced up to 12 m in standard configurations) retract the overhead line to create a clear work envelope above the train. An intuitive control panel with three user levels; touch interface, and status indicators, streamlines operation and reduces training time. Built from durable aluminium bars assembled with junction clamps (splices), the system requires low maintenance without compromising performance. The standard based motorized systems are adapted to your depot layout. It’s a complete solution supported by Conductix‑Wampfler’s end-to-end service: from design, engineering, and testing to on‑site training, supervision, and maintenance.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What is the Conductix-Wampfler Retractable Catenary System?
It’s a removable overhead electrification solution for pantograph‑equipped rolling stock in rail maintenance depots, enabling safe roof access and vehicle lifting during maintenance.
How does it differ from a rigid catenary?
Unlike rigid catenary, the retractable version can be moved out of the work envelope to provide free access above the vehicle, facilitating roof work and bogie inspection/maintenance.
Is it compatible with existing depot equipment?
Yes. It is designed to interlock disconnectors, walkways, bridge cranes, doors, signalling equipment, and lifting platforms to maximize safety and functionality.
What safety features are included?
The system includes emergency stop, alarm, and maximum‑usage controls, and supports safety interlocking with depot equipment for protected maintenance operations.
Can the system be retrofitted to existing depots?
Yes. It can be tailor‑made to your depot layout and integrated with existing equipment for cost‑effective deployment.
Does it support all pantograph equipped rolling stock?
Yes. It is designed for any rolling stock with a pantograph used in maintenance depots.
How is the system operated?
The system is managed via an intuitive control panel featuring three user levels, a touch panel, push buttons, and installation/operation/maintenance status indicators.
How quickly can the catenary be retracted?
The system enables fast, efficient retraction through the control panel, reducing maintenance time and labor costs (actual cycle times depend on configuration).
Is the system fully retractable?
Yes. It retracts to create a clear, safe space above the train, enabling vehicle lifting and unrestricted access to the roof.
What are the key mechanical components?
- Aluminium bars assembled with junction clamps (splices)
- A combination of motorized and non-motorized swiveling arms (up to 6 m long) are installed at a maximum spacing of 12 m.
What materials are used, and why?
Aluminium (bars) and steel (swiveling arms) deliver durability with low maintenance requirements while maintaining system rigidity and reliability.
Is it low maintenance?
Yes. The use of aluminium/steel components and robust assemblies supports low maintenance without compromising performance.
What kinds of maintenance tasks does it enable?
By retracting the catenary, it provides free access for roof work, bogie inspection, and vehicle lifting, covering the full range of typical rolling stock maintenance operations.
What control/permission levels are supported?
The control system supports three user levels to help align operation with depot roles and procedures.
Can it integrate with depot safety procedures and lock out protocols?
Yes. The system’s interlocks and maximum‑usage controls are designed to work alongside depot safety procedures and equipment.
How is the system retracted?
The system is retracted using motorized arms which rotate to move the conductors into and out of their operating position. Free arms positioned between the motorized arms rotate with the system to provide intermediate support of the conductors.
How customizable is the solution?
Highly. It can be configured to your building constraints, rolling stock envelope, interlock signals, and workflow needs.
What support services are available?
Conductix‑Wampfler provides an end‑to‑end service: design, engineering, testing, installation supervision as well as on‑site training for installation and maintenance.
